VALO, BROOKLYN RALLY TO WIN FIRST TITLE, 3-2

Elmer Valo's 8th inning triple lead the way for a Brooklyn victory, 3-2, handing the franchise their first DBS championship over the heavily-favored North Dallas Forty in five games.

The Forty's Dutch Leonard dueled with Al Brazle, as both pitchers went six innings only allowing a single run. In the top of the eighth, North Dallas' Roy Cullenbine hit his second home run of the Series, to put North Dallas on top, 2-1. However, in the bottom of the frame, Valo's one-out triple scored Dixie Howell to tie the game, and he scored one batter later on Lou Boudreau's sacrifice fly to give Brooklyn the lead. North Dallas provided a little drama in the top of the ninth when Jeff Heath missed a game-tying homerun by 3 feet.

This was Brooklyn's first DBS title in the 20-year history of the league, failing to win the World Series in 1940 when they lost a 3-1 lead to Montgomery, and also lost the inaugural World Series in 1928 when the team was known as the Sahara Jihad. Prior to this season, Brooklyn had finished in second place six years in a row.

Brooklyn outfielder Dale Mitchell, who is the overwhelming favorite for the league's Rookie of the Year Award, wass named Series MVP. He batted .412 with a .765 slugging percentage and 6 RBI.
